On January 30, 2014, Utah County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Wride was fatally wounded during an encounter with Jose Angel Garcia-Jauregui and Meagan Grunwald. Angel and Grunwald then fled the scene. Law enforcement officers from several agencies, including the Utah Highway Patrol and Juab County Sheriff’s Office, pursued them through Utah and Juab Counties. The pursuit involved multiple shooting incidents, a carjacking, and high speeds. Angel and Grunwald were apprehended at milepost 216 on I-15 in Juab County after their vehicle rolled into a fence. Angel was shot in the head during the apprehension and later died from his injuries. Grunwald was taken into custody.
This book is something that I have wanted to write for a while. In Eagle Mountain, Utah in the heart of the city there is a regional park called the “Cory B Wride Memorial Park”. One of the main roads into Eagle Mountain and the Cedar Valley that has been given the name “Cory B Wride Memorial Highway” (SR-73). Along that highway there is a small marker that is usually adorned with flowers, balloons and other things left by those who know the reason for the marker. Cory B Wride has become a name that is well known and spoken often in the Cedar Valley communities, but after the years, and the number of new residents has increased, the reason for the memorials has faded over time. On January 30th, 2024, that marker was replaced with a monument in honor of Cory B Wride, to mark the 10th anniversary of the murder of Cory B Wride.
As the population continues to grow in the area, I feel it important to let the story be known about what happened and why we see the name Cory B Wride on parks and highways in the area. The content within this book has been sourced from local news articles, court transcripts, court proceedings, police reports, personal interviews with those involved, and the records of medical emergency responders.
