Angel Stabs Friend Twenty-One Times with A Screw Driver
September 6, 2007 – Jose Angel Garcia (20) was charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony as well as aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. The incident occurred in Springville, Utah.
Mike B and Megan E (not to be confused with Meagan Grunwald) were talking to each other outside Mike’s apartment after spending an evening together in Springville, Utah. It was a little after midnight on September 6, 2007, and they were enjoying the clear 60-degree weather. As they were exchanging their goodbyes to each other. Their goodbyes were interrupted as they were startled by a dark colored four door Dodge Stratus making its way down the street under the streetlights. The recently purchased sedan still had the temporary tag on it with the license plate frame from the dealership it was recently purchased from. The car stops and the couple watches as Megan’s neighbor Jose Juis Sida gets pushed from the car into the middle of the street. They recognized Sida from parties they have had in their apartment buildings common areas, he is also Megan’s neighbor.1
The dark sedan then pulls down the street a little way and then abruptly stops. The vehicle’s tires start to spin, and the vehicle accelerates in reverse at a high rate of speed directly at Sida. Sida, who is intoxicated, is unable to think or move fast enough to avoid the car and is hit by the vehicle. Sida, after the impact, lands on the trunk of the car with a loud thud, slides off the back of the vehicle and is then run over by the rear tires. The vehicle then moves forward and drives down the street, leaving Sida laying motionless in the middle of the street.
Mike witnessing the accident and in a state of panic runs to see if Sida is okay. He starts helping him when he sees the vehicle make a U turn and start heading back towards them. He grabs Sida and drags him from the middle of the road to the parking strip and is able to pull him just off the street as the car pulls up again. The car stops behind his girlfriend Megan’s car blocking it in. Megan had pulled her Volkswagen bug up to the curb with the front of the vehicle facing the curb. Angel’s Stratus was now parked directly behind the VW Bug blocking it in.
The driver gets out of the vehicle and pulls on a ski mask. As the driver is putting the ski mask in place Mike recognizes the driver as Jose Angel Garcia. Angel is a friend of Sida and attended the same parties that Mike had attended in the apartment complex. Angel does not live in the same apartment complex but lives in Provo and hangs out with Sida.
Things escalate even further. Angel then walks up to Sida and Mike and threatens Mike as well as Megan. Megan does not know for sure what to do, she cannot leave the situation because Angel has blocked her car in with his. Mike and Angel exchange words and Angel threatens Mike that if he does not get out of the way he will put Mike in the trunk of the car. Angel looks at Megan and tells her to, “GO INSIDE!” Without hesitation she goes inside Mike’s apartment with Mike following close behind.
Once they are both inside the apartment, they find Mike’s roommate, Steve, and tell him about what is going on outside. At about that time a third person, Juan Otero exits the vehicle and tries to stop the assault on Sida by Angel.
After Mike explains to his roommate what happened outside, Mike’s roommate Steve comes out of the apartment to see what is happening and sees Sida and Angel start pushing each other around and getting into a heated argument. During the fight Otero reaches into the car and grabs the car keys from the ignition and throws them into the street. At the same time Angel opens the trunk and grabs a crowbar. They both meet at the back of the car and Otero pulls out a knife and starts waving the knife at Angel. Angel then starts hitting Otero with the crowbar. Otero falls to the ground unconscious as he is repeatedly kicked by Angel.
Steve shocked by what he is seeing runs into the house and calls 911. With Otero unconscious on the ground and everyone else retreating to the apartments, Angel grabs a philips screwdriver and then starts to attack Sida while he is laying on the grass between the street and the sidewalk. (During the course of compiling the documents for this book, I found out that it was not uncommon for Angel to have a screwdriver in his back pocket. None of the police reports or the witnesses stated where the screwdriver came from.) Sida is stabbed by Angel 21 times including stabs to his neck, legs, chest, buttocks, abdomen, and back which resulting in a fractured vertebra in his neck.
Otero regains consciousness and sees Angel assaulting Sida. He tries to get up to help Sida but because of his injuries falls to the ground. Angel throws the crowbar back into the trunk, slams the trunk door, jumps back into the car, and then drives off. He leaves his two friends bloody laying on the side of the road, not knowing if either of them is still alive.
