Meagan Meets Angel

On St. Patrick’s Day 2013 Megan’s neighbor introduces Meagan (17) to Angel (27) after he was recently released from prison.  She had met Angel at church initially, but they officially met at Meagan’s neighbor’s house on March 17th.  This is the same neighbor that Angel is currently living with.  Currently Angel’s parole Agent still thinks that Angel is living in Provo.  Angel helped her do her homework and by the summer of 2013 they were boyfriend and girlfriend.  Meagan’s neighbor become fully aware of their relationship the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in 2013.

Meagan says that the first time she officially met Angel was in June 2013, which is different than the date given by her neighbor.  The neighbor remembers that it was at a St. Patrick’s Day party that they were celebrating when she introduced Meagan to Angel.  Meagan went to Chri’s house (Kristin Allred) to see if she could find someone to help her study.  When she got there, Kristin said, “Angel’s upstairs.”  Meagan responded, “Okay.” “I’ll come up there with you and I’ll introduce you to him again, and you guys can talk,” continued Kristin.  (According to Meagan’s testimony at her trial.)   Meagan at that time got a good feeling from Angel and felt that he was going to be helpful in her learning the medical terminology for her CNA classes.

Mid-August Meagan goes over to Kristin’s house again to talk to Angel to see if he is still interested in helping her with her studies.  Meagan asks Chris, “Hey, like where is Angel?  I kind of want to talk to him to see if he is still willing to help me study.”  Kristin replies, “I don’t know where he’s at right now.  Here’s his cell phone number and you can text him.”

Meagan then texts Angel.  “Is this Angel?”.  Angel responds, “Yes”.  Meagan then texts, “Are you willing to help me study?  It is Meagan, by the way.”  Angel responds, “Yeah.”  “Are you really okay?  I don’t have money to pay you, because I’m really like — but it would basically really, really be appreciated if you took the time and helped me study a couple hours every night,” Meagan replies to Angel.  Angel texted back, “Yeah.  Just text me and tell me basically when you want me to come over.  I’ll be at Chris’ and we can study.”

Angel Moves in With Meagan

Meagan testifies in her court trial that she remembers that Angel moved in with them officially sometime at the end of September 2013.  Meagan remembers going from the kitchen to the garage because Angel and her dad, Jerry, were out in the garage talking.  “Hey, like I’m ready to study.  Like I got my laptop ready, and I got stuff so we can study,” Meagan says as she opens the door.   Angel replies, “Go Back inside.  I’m talking to your dad.”  Meagan says, “Okay,” and closes the door.  She later finds out that Angel was giving Jerry a small amount of money for rent, the amount was $200-$300, and was also buying his own food so that he could stay with them. There was some discrepancy during the trail about the exact amount of money that changed hands, both $200 and $300 were used. Meagan’s testimony states that it was in late September, not November, when Angel moved into the Grunwald home.

Meagan and her family live in a small 1600 square foot home in Draper, Utah.  The house is a small rambler style house.  The residence has one bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, and two bedrooms. Angel moves in with Meagan and they share the northwest bedroom. There is some discussion during the trial about the exact living arrangements.  Some testify that he was living on the couch, others testify he was living with Meagan in her room, and then there were those who testified that Meagan was sleeping in her Moms room with Angel sleeping in her room.  Where Jerry, her dad, fit into all of this is still a mystery.  What we do know for sure is that during the search warrant that was issued in January 2014 there were items from both Angel and Meagan found in her room, and it appeared that they did indeed share that living space.  There was also conflicting testimony of if they were having a sexual relationship.  But the facts are that when Meagan was arrested, she was pregnant with Angel’s baby.

Their bedroom is sparsely decorated.  It includes an entertainment center in the northwest corner that had Angels Old Spice deodorant on it during the search.   The room has a small twin bed and in the southeast corner a little lockbox.

The lock box contains items like .40 caliber rounds of different types and manufactures.  There are Federal and Winchester brands as well as hollow point and regular rounds.  The lockbox contains pictures, two baggies, one that contains Crystal Methamphetamine the other baggie appeared that it also at one time contained Crystal Methamphetamine, but one corner of the bag had been ripped and the contents no longer were in the bag.  There was a Wells Fargo envelope that contained $545 dollars in varying denominations.   The lockbox also contains a glass pipe used for smoking drug the Methamphetamine.  It also contained the birth certificate for Meagan.

The room has a closet that contains clothes for both Angel and Meagan.   There is a table along the east wall that contained piles of papers.  Some of those papers included Angel’s United Healthcare insurance card, as well as correspondence belonging to Meagan.  There is also a three-ring binder on the table that has “Angel, I love you” written on it.    The three-ring binder contains writing assignments written by Meagan.  There is also a writing desk on the west wall by a window in the room that usually has drawing notepads on it as well as a framed picture of Megan and Angel.  The desk also has other papers including a Utah fishing license belonging to Angel.

On the south wall there is a calendar that both Angel and Meagan record dates and events in.  There is also a fridge along the south wall.  There are items attached to the fridge, one of those items is a Kansas State expired driver’s license for Angel as well as several letters of Angels, and also his US citizenship certificate hanging on the fridge.
