Angel and Meagan turn left off of redwood road or SR-68 on to US 6 when they reach Elberta. They then head east towards Goshen, Genola, and Santaquin. Meagan asked Angel, “Will you please just let me get out of the car? You can take the truck. Just let me out of the truck.”
“No, you’re going to f***ing drive.” Angel pauses for a few minutes then continues, “We need to go back to the house. We need to go back to the house.”
“Why?”
“We need to go get more bullets.”
“You didn’t give those bullets to your friend like you said you was going to.”
Angel then responds, “F***ing Shut Up!” Angel had moved the gun from resting on the center console, and it was now resting on his lap, but it was still aimed towards Meagan. They have arrived at Santaquin, and Angel tells Meagan to turn right onto I-15 and they start heading southbound.
The Tundra is seen by officers heading south on I-15 near Santaquin, Utah. Lieutenant Gurney of the Salem City Police Department, a resource officer for the Salem Hills High School with 19 years of experience, is leaving the school and heading home when he became aware of the 10/200 from Utah County. Not having his radio on when in the school he calls his sergeant to get details. “What are they looking for this truck for?” His sergeant replies, “I’m not aware yet.”. Just then he rolls up on a white pickup truck he tells his sergeant, “Well, I’m rolling up on a white truck right now. What are we looking for?”
The white pick-up was driving along side a semi and was traveling 20 miles per hour under the speed limit in the fast lane. There was another white SUV between Gurney in his marked police car and the white pickup truck. They pass the first Santaquin exit and start heading down a small incline, but the white pickup truck starts to slow down. Officer Gurney is wondering what they are trying to do.
As they start heading southbound, Angel says, “We need to go back and get the bullets. We need to go back and get the bullets.”
“But you have to promise me on thing.”
“What?”
“You’re not going to do anything to my uncle or my mom if they’re there.”
Angel then responds by describing to Meagan how he is going to tie up her uncle Buck and light him on fire, or he may just shoot him. Meagan then says, “I’m sorry, Angel. I can’t let you do that.”
“Okay. I promise I won’t – I won’t hurt either of them.”
Meagan the says, “Okay, but you’re going to give me the key, and Im going to go in the house and get them and I’ll be right back out.”
“Okay.”
Meagan then flipped a U-ee and started heading northbound on I-15 towards the Grunwald residence. “Angel, remember, you promised.”
The white truck then steps on its brakes and drops enters the median and does a U-turn and heads back down I-15 going northbound. Officer Guney is unable to make the turn by sees Meagan in the driver seat and she looks back at him through the side mirror. He was only able to see the first letter of the license plate which appeared to be the letter “C”.
Deputy Sherwood heard Officer Gurney say that he had spotted the vehicle and it was now heading north bound on I-15. Sherwood positions himself on the Santaquin northbound onramp to I-15. He stops short of I-15 so that he could also watch the off-ramp as well as traffic on I-15.
Deputy Sherwood then sees the white pick-up truck exit I-15 and take the Santaquin Main Street exit. Deputy Sherwood then turns around and drives down the on ramp towards the onramp and offramp intersection.
The white truck is signaling to get back on I-15 and head southbound. Sherwood gets close enough to the vehicle to read the license plate and makes a positive identification on the vehicle. At this point Sherwood did not have his emergency lights activated.
Angel then starts bringing up that he thinks that uncle Buck was the cause of everything. Once again Meagan says, “It’s not because of uncle Buck.” Angel then starts talking again about how he is going to tie uncle Buck up and light him on fire. At that point Meagan decided that she was going to save uncle Buck and her mom and she turns off on the Santaquin exit, and turns towards a Maverick.
Officer Gurney continues southbound on I-15 until he comes to another emergency turnaround. He quickly takes the turn around and engages his emergency lights. That is when he hears over the radio, “Why are we looking for this car?” Dispatch then responds, “This vehicle may be involved in an officer down situation.” Officer Guney takes the Santaquin exit looking for the vehicle when he hears on the radio, “The vehicle just passed me heading westbound on Santaquin Main Street.”
