Angel was born in Mexico. According to his uncle, Jose Angel Garcia Gomez1, Angel had a family in Mexico which included two children under the age of 9. The last time his uncle saw Angel, was in 2007 in Mexico. At the time of the incidents in this book Uncle Joe, what he was called by Angel, lived in San Antonio Texas. His highest level of education was the 11th grade as noted on court documents2.
Angel’s brother, Gustavo Antonio Garcia Jauregui lived in Provo, Utah from 2007 and during the incidents in this book. Angel lived with his brother in Provo in a room they rented after they both moved from Kansas. Angel spent time in prison for attempted murder, lived in a halfway house, then moved back in with his brother who was then living in a condo. He lived in Provo with his brother for several months and then moved to Draper. He initially moved in with Gustavo’s friends Chris and Rudy. He then moves down the street from Chris and Rudy’s house into the Grunwald household. In January 2014 the Grunwald household was going through some turmoil and was in the process of moving to Cedar City in southern Utah. At that time Angel was in a sexual relation with Megean Grunwald (17), who was pregnant with his baby, and had talked to Meagan about moving to Mexico with him. At the end of January 2014 Angel had absconded and was in violation of his parole, which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant the day prior to the shooting of Sergeant Cory B. Wride.
Gustavo, Angel’s brother, classified Angel as a consummate ladies’ man. Gustavo testifies in court during Meagan’s trial that he had met some of Angel’s numerous girlfriends and that he had numerous girlfriends. Those girlfriends did not include the family he had in Mexico that his uncle also talked about during trial. Meagan was the third girlfriend Angel had in the short time since being released from prison in Utah for attempting to murder his friend with a screwdriver. One of those girlfriends was pregnant at the time he was sexually active with Meagan and living in the Grunwald home. Gustavo stated that Angel, “would go through women very quickly.”
