Meagan’s phone starts to ring in the center console of the truck. She looks at Angel and says, “Can I please answer it? It’s just my mom.” Angel tells her, “Yeah. You better – you better not say anything about what’s going on. You better sound like you’re okay.”
Tori on the other side of the phone, still at the Grunwald house asks Meagan, “Did you take the garbage out?”
Meagan replies, “Yes, Mom, I did.”
“Are you okay?”
Meagan tells her mom, “Yeah” and then tells her how much she loves her.

A cell phone rings in San Antonio, Texas. Jose Angel Garcia Gomez answers it because it has an 801 area code and he knows that his nephew Angel is currently in Utah. Uncle Joe is a trailer driver and is currently working on getting a trailer ready. Uncle Joe and Angel have a good relationship. He has not seen Angel for seven years, but they keep in touch on birthdays and other holidays. It is not unusual for Angel to call Uncle Joe to just talk.
Angel says, “Joe, Joe. Don’t say my name. I’m Fine.” Angel and Uncle Joe call each other Joe. They have the same name except for their last surname. Angel sounds anguished, pressured and very nervous to Uncle Joe. Angle continues, “I’m Okay, I’m Okay.” Uncle Joe responds, “What Happened? How are you?”
“I did the… I messed up again. I did what I did before. I’m fine.” Continues Angel.
“You need to contact your parole officer. They’re looking for you. You need to contact him.”
“You don’t understand. Wasn’t worth it. I did the same thing. I messed up again. I’m fine. I’m with my girlfriend’s family. They’re protecting me. I’m good.”
“You need to turn yourself in.” Uncle Joe pleads with Angel.
“I’m going to go to California. I’m Okay.”
Uncle Joe insists, “You need to speak to your — you need to hand yourself in and speak to your officer.”
Angel ends the conversation by saying, “I need to go. I need to go.” He then hangs up the phone, leaving Uncle Joe wondering what is going to happen.
Uncle Joe then calls Angel’s dad who lives in Mexico, but since his dad was currently at a party, he “didn’t dare tell them how strange, how nervous Pepe (another name he called Angel) seemed in the call”. The then hangs up the phone and calls Angel’s brother Gustavo and told him what had happened and gave him the phone number that Angel called him from.
