Book > 4.0 – September 2007 – Springville Utah > 4.2 – Police Arrive On Scene

Otero slowly makes his way to a nearby porch where he calls his wife and tells her that he has been hurt. She then calls Angel Buitron, who was also at the birthday party and witnessed the rap battle between Sida and Angel.

The first police officer from the Springville Police department arrives on the scene after Steve’s 911 call.  Corporal Edwards, the case officer, was the first officers on the scene. When he arrived, he found Sida laying in the gutter with stab wounds to his neck, back and abdomen. As he approached he could smell the strong odor of alcohol, for the recent birthday party festivities. Edwards reaches for his radio and calls for an ambulance and the start to secure the area by searching for the suspect.1

As Edwards is assessing Sida’s wounds Deputies Critser and Chappel arrive on scene and start a sweep of the area and locate Otero on the front porch of one of the apartments. He was bleeding from his head from what the officers reported as a wound by a blunt object. They then call for a second ambulance to help Otero. Shortly after both Sida and Otero are rushed to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center via Springville Ambulance.

Sida had injuries to the right side of his head including road rash and right orbital swelling. He also suffered road rash on his left hip, right elbow and leg. The stab wounds were all over his body. There were twenty-one stab wounds in all. Three of the wounds were glancing blows and did not puncture the skin, one to the right medial upper calf, one to the right lateral buttocks, one to the left lateral buttocks, one to the left upper tail bone, five wounds to the back (T8, T12 and L4 vertebrae), one to the right posterior shoulder, one to the lateral back of the neck, one to the side of the neck, one to the right hop, two to his left side, three to his abdomen and three to his chest. He also had received a facture of the left transverse process of C2, which extended into the foramen for the left vertebral artery.

Otero had injuries to his head caused by the crowbar. His injuries included swelling on the left side of his head, left orbital fracture, and an interorbital hematoma.2

The investigating officer Sergeant Tipton was called at his home at 01:00 by dispatch and notified that two males had been stabbed, and was asked to respond to the scene. Tipton arrived on scene after Sida and Otero had been driven to the hospital. At this point Mike and Megan were both sitting in the front seats of her VW Bug which was still parked facing the curb. On the grassy area by the curb he could see the aftermath of the attack. He found two cut shirts lying on the grass, a wallet with keys, a large kitchen type knife, and a Phillips screw driver. There were also some loose coins in several locations on the grass.

Buitron had arrived from Provo and was talking talking to a Provo Police officer on the side of the road. Sergeant Tipton interviews him about the incident at the party, and he explains how he arrived at the area. Buitron said that he arrived at the party at 20:00 in Provo. A written statement in Spanish was collected from Buitron and translated into English by the Provo Police Officer he was talking to.

Meanwhile Chief Finlayson of the Springville police department was taking photographs of the scene. Tipton gathered all of the evidence and placed the items in bags.

Buitron then got into the car with Sergeant Tipton and showed him where Otero lives in South Provo. He also showed him where Otero’s brother Joseph lives. Otero’s car was parked in his brothers driveway. He then showed the Sergeant where Angel’s girlfriend’s mother works. Buitron was unable to tell Sergeant Tipton where Angel was living at the time. Buitron told Tipton that everyone knew each other from hanging out together at parties.

There where seven police officers involved in this case. Edwards the case officer, then Drumm, Critser, Chappel, Eskland and Chief Finlayson as assisting officers, and Tipton as the investigating officer.
