Mayor Tom Westmoreland (Mayor: 2018-2025, City Council: 2014-2018)1 made the following statement about the Cory B. Wride park in Eagle Mountain Utah after I inquired about it in a recent email.
“Sgt. Cory Wride was tragically killed shortly after Chris Pengra, Adam Bradley, and I took office. His loss left a profound mark and a significant void in our community. It’s one that can still be felt.
While I did not have the chance to know Sgt. Wride well, it was evident just by interacting with those that knew him that he was a genuine and good-hearted public servant. On the day of his passing, he had stopped to assist someone he believed needed help, making this all the more tragic.
In the years that followed, Eagle Mountain City made the important decision to sell its power and gas utilities, generating essential revenue to kickstart various projects in our young and developing community. We recognized the need for a transformative initiative that would help move Eagle Mountain beyond a rather sordid past.
We envisioned a large regional park at the heart of our city center, packed with amenities that would benefit all residents. This park would be unique in that the funds from the utility sales were used for its construction, ensuring that no tax dollars were necessary. Our goal was to create an inclusive space where families could enjoy a day together without anyone feeling left out. I believe we have successfully realized those aspirations.
Cory Wride Memorial Park has become a true gem of our city, setting a new standard for regional parks and fostering a sense of community pride as residents have embraced it.
In this way, the park serves as a fitting tribute to the dedication and service of Cory B. Wride. I was especially moved during the park’s dedication ceremony when Sgt. Wride’s family attended. I overheard his widow express her fears that the people of Eagle Mountain might forget her husband. However, when she saw his name permanently etched onto the building, she felt a sense of relief and peace, knowing he would be forever remembered.”2
